How to Resolve Dual Cookie Banner Conflicts That Break Script Firing

How to Resolve Dual Cookie Banner Conflicts That Break Script Firing

Dual Cookie Banner Conflict

A dual cookie banner conflict occurs when two separate consent banners are active on the same website at the same time. This commonly happens when a platform-native banner (such as CDK, Dealer.com, Shopify apps, or similar tools) is running alongside the Visual Visitor consent banner or another third-party consent management platform (CMP).

Notes
This conflict can cause inconsistent or unpredictable script behavior, including the Visual Visitor script firing when it should not—or failing to fire at all.

Common Symptoms

You may be experiencing a dual banner conflict if you notice:

  • Two cookie consent banners appearing on your website
  • The Visual Visitor script firing even when a visitor declines cookies
  • Identification volume that is unusually high or low without a clear cause
  • Data being collected despite a visitor not granting consent

How to Resolve

1. Identify All Active Banners

Load your website in a browser and note any consent pop-ups that appear.

Check the following for additional banners:

  • Your CMS or website platform
  • CRM or platform providers (CDK, Dealer.com, Podium, etc.)
  • Tag managers (such as Google Tag Manager)
  • Installed apps or plugins

Alert
Only one consent management platform should control script behavior on your site.

Decide which banner will be your primary CMP and disable all others.

3. Configure Based on Your Setup

If using Visual Visitor’s built-in consent banner:

  • Disable any platform-native or third-party banners
  • Use Visual Visitor as the sole controller for marketing scripts

If using a third-party CMP (e.g., OneTrust, Cookiebot):

  • Disable the Visual Visitor banner
  • Ensure the Visual Visitor script is categorized correctly (typically under Marketing or Analytics)
  • Confirm the script is blocked until consent is granted

4. Test Your Setup

After making updates:

  1. Open your website in a browser
  2. Open Developer Tools (F12) → Network tab
  3. Verify that the Visual Visitor script does not fire until after consent is accepted
