What is PII?
PII stands for Personally Identifiable Information. Visual Visitor protects private data, such as first name, last name, and email address, by using encryption (email hashing). This ensures visitor identities remain private while still enhancing analytics, including demographic insights, page visits, and other engagement metrics.

This feature is only accessible upon request.
Benefits and Reasoning Behind Using PII:
When PII is hashed, it is transformed into a fixed-length string of characters, which enhances data security. Even though the information can still be used for identification or authentication purposes, it becomes unreadable without the decryption key, adding an extra layer of protection for sensitive data.
Compliance with HIPAA:
For companies subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), collecting and properly managing PII is necessary for maintaining compliance. HIPAA regulates the handling of Protected Health Information (PHI), and managing PII securely ensures that healthcare providers and organizations are protecting sensitive patient information in accordance with the law.
Securing Data Sent to Third Parties:
When PII is shared with third-party service providers, hashing or encrypting that data ensures it remains secure during transmission. This reduces the risk of breaches or unauthorized access, especially when outsourcing certain functions (like payment processing, marketing, or cloud services) that require access to sensitive customer information.
